Lab tour

The GFZ Potsdam has a highly developed, interdisciplinary laboratory infrastructure in which scientific questions of basic and applied research in the field of geoenergy are dealt with.

The laboratories for geothermal rock and fluid physics enable the characterization and parameterization of physical rock and fluid properties, and a mechanical testing system (MTS) can analyse hydraulic and mechanical rock properties of geomaterials - all under simulated in-situ conditions of pressure and temperature at depths of up to 4 to 10 km. With the acquisition of the new TRUE-TRIAX high-pressure petrophysical testing facility, the GFZ has entered a new field of experimentation worldwide. It can be used to carry out highly specialized, experimental pressure tests on rock samples that open up previously unattainable experimental dimensions. Data on the thermal properties of rocks, minerals, geomaterials and cement are obtained in the Laboratory for Thermal Petrophysics. The Fluid Lab offers instruments for experiments and measuring equipment for the characterization, analysis and monitoring of processes in geothermal fluids. Another focus is the kinetics of the formation and decomposition of gas hydrates and their influence on the physical properties of sediments.
