Carlos Lorenzo Merino, Dr. in Prehistory by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2007), belongs to the Atapuerca Research Team since 1989, team that was awarded in 1997 with the Premio Príncipe de Asturias for Scientific and Technical Research. Since then continuously participated in the excavation and investigation of the Atapuerca sites. deposits

Professor of Human Evolution at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona, researcher at the Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution and coordinator of the Master in Quaternary Archaeology and Human Evolution at the same University. He developed his doctoral thesis at the Department of Paleontology at the Complutense University of Madrid, research fellow of CSIC, a fellow of the «Residencia de Estudiantes» in Madrid and has conducted several research stays, including the Cleveland Natural History Museum and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
His research focuses on the anatomical and evolutionary study of human fossils, mainly from the remains of the postcranial skeleton. In his doctoral thesis, directed by Juan Luis Arsuaga, studied the evolution of hominid hand, which includes the remains found in the Sierra de Atapuerca. These fossils are the largest hand of all human evolution record. Other topics developed in their research is the evolution of sexual dimorphism in hominids, three-dimensional CT reconstruction from human fossils and digital applications to Archaeology.

Author of over 80 publications, including articles found in major scientific journals, both general science as Nature, Science and PNAS, or more specific field of human evolution, as Journal of Human Evolution or American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
